ViBe - Virtual Assistant

Preservation and increase of mobility in old age with a virtual assistance system.

Accessable routing from door-to-door, by gathering and referring to way-related information.

As part of the demographic change, the requirements of public space grow, to be as accessible as possible. As reaction to this development, the minitry for education and reseach in Germany provided the reseach framework program „IKT 2020 – Forschung für Innovationen“ (ICP 2020 – reseach for innovations).

The VIBE project is a part of this research program to support mobility in later ages. Essential fundamentals for innovation and other application areas are application/realisation-oriented research- and development products in the area of the basic technologies eletronics and microsystems, softwaresystems and knowledge/ know how processing, as well as communication and networks. The ICP funding is structured along the lines of strategic formulations or research lines: „IPC in complex systems“ (embedded systems“), „new business processes and prodcution methods“, as well as „internet of things and services“. The aim of the VIBE project, was the development and testing of an assistance system for people in later ages, to increase their mobility options in urban areas, while taking intermodal planning and navigation into account. This importantly includes a functionality to support the partial use of public transportation.

It was possible, to give proof for the efficiency of such a virtual assistance companion, in terms of the meaningful increase of the ability of eldery people to be mobile, i.e. move freely due to their daily mobility choices.

The course of the project additionally included a network editor to collect real geo-based landmarks and notable parts of the infrastructure in public transportation. VIOM´s software tool serves the creation of a routable network for pedestrian walking. Every user has an individualised profile, the ViBe software accomplishes routing according to those profiles, and via footpaths and public transportation. Various walking speed values can be included in the profiles, so that an accurate estimated arrival time can be expected.

The additional possibility of entering individual points of interest eases the orientation. Potential areas of use of the developed technology are opening up for service providers, professional support sevices, as well as for “Seniorenstifte”, relatives in a private environment or neighbourhood initiatives.
